Editorial examples and prices may be outdated. A protocol or ecosystem label does not confirm every feature. Check the exact device’s current documentation and reviewed connection paths. Specific corrections and references are noted below.
Whether you need extra hardware depends on the connection route. Check controllers, bridges, coordinators, and Thread border routers separately. You may already own the required hardware, but a “no hub” label is not enough to establish this.
What is a hub, exactly?
A smart home hub is a device — usually a small box or a USB stick plugged into a server — that acts as a translator between your non-Wi-Fi smart devices and your home network.
Zigbee and Z-Wave switches don't speak Wi-Fi. They speak their own protocol. A hub speaks both: it talks to your Zigbee switch in Zigbee, and to your phone or voice assistant in Wi-Fi/IP. Without a hub, a Zigbee switch is just an expensive dumb switch.
Common hubs: Home Assistant (most powerful, free software), Hubitat (plug-and-play, local), SmartThings (cloud-based, easy), Lutron Smart Bridge (Lutron-only), Amazon Echo (basic Zigbee support).
Lutron Caséta: the exception
Lutron Caséta switches use a proprietary protocol called ClearConnect. They require the Lutron Smart Bridge ($80–$120) to connect to Alexa, Google, or Apple Home. The bridge comes in the Pro kit or is sold separately. Without the bridge, Caséta switches work as normal dumb switches but have zero smart functionality.
When you absolutely need a hub
Zigbee switches: Require a Zigbee coordinator. This can be a dedicated USB stick ($15–$25) paired with Home Assistant, a SmartThings hub, a Hubitat hub, or an Amazon Echo (4th gen and newer have Zigbee built in).
Z-Wave switches: Require a Z-Wave controller. Home Assistant with a Z-Wave USB stick, SmartThings, or Hubitat.
Lutron Caséta: Requires the Lutron Smart Bridge. No exceptions — this is a hard requirement.
Inovelli Blue/Red series: Require a Zigbee or Z-Wave hub respectively.
When you don't need a hub
Some Wi-Fi devices connect directly to a router for their manufacturer’s app. Other ecosystem connections can need a controller, account, or bridge. Matter over Wi-Fi needs a compatible controller; Matter over Thread additionally needs a Thread border router. Check the exact hardware already in your home.
Hub requirements by protocol
On small screens, scroll the table to see every column.
| Protocol | Hub Required? | Recommended Hub | Approx. Hub Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | No | None | — |
| Matter (Wi-Fi) | Controller needed | Compatible Matter controller | Depends on existing hardware |
| Matter (Thread) | Controller and border router | Compatible controller + Thread border router | Depends on existing hardware |
| Zigbee | Yes | Home Assistant + USB dongle | $15–$200+ |
| Z-Wave | Yes | Home Assistant + USB stick | $30–$200+ |
| Lutron ClearConnect | Yes | Lutron Smart Bridge | $80–$120 |
Is a hub worth it?
Start with the devices and functions you need. Compare the complete connection path, equipment cost, setup effort, and ongoing dependencies. Local control can be possible with several protocols; the integration method determines what your setup actually supports.
