Many smart switches require a neutral conductor at their installation location. Confirm your actual wiring and the exact model’s requirements before buying; the age of a home alone cannot establish compatibility.
What is a neutral wire and why does it matter?
The neutral is a circuit conductor with a different role from protective earth/ground. Some smart switches use it to power their electronics. Models designed for no-neutral operation have specific load and wiring requirements. Wire colors and an existing switch’s connections alone are not enough to identify the circuit correctly.
How to check if you have a neutral wire
Do not identify a neutral from wire color or a non-contact tester reading alone. The previous version of this guide incorrectly said that a white bundle testing “live” confirms a neutral; it does not. Have a qualified electrician identify the circuit and confirm the exact model’s wiring requirements. Before any electrical work, isolate power and verify de-energization with suitable test equipment. Do not handle exposed wiring if you are unsure.
Old homes are most likely to lack neutrals
Wiring arrangements vary, including within one home. Do not assume a neutral is present or absent based on building age. Have the circuit identified before choosing equipment.
Your options without a neutral wire
Select an exact model documented for no-neutral operation and your load, voltage, region, and wiring arrangement. Zooz ZEN76/ZEN77 and Lutron PD-5NE require a neutral; earlier versions of this guide incorrectly listed them as no-neutral choices.
A bypass is not a universal replacement for a missing neutral. Use one only where the exact product’s installation documentation specifies it. An electrician can assess wiring changes. A suitable smart bulb with a compatible wireless control may be another option.

Will any no-neutral switch work with my LED bulbs?
No. Check the manufacturer’s supported load types, minimum load, compatible bulbs, and any documented bypass requirements. Flickering or glow does not establish which accessory will fix the problem. Follow the exact installation manual and consult a qualified electrician rather than adding a generic bypass.

Is it dangerous to install a no-neutral switch?
Electrical installation requires correct isolation, verification, wiring, and load selection. Follow the exact manual and use a qualified electrician when unsure. No-neutral does not mean risk-free.
Can I add a neutral wire myself?
Have a qualified electrician assess circuit changes and applicable requirements. Never substitute a ground conductor for a neutral.
Do all smart switches need a neutral?
No. Many are specifically designed to work without one. See the comparison table above. The trend is toward more no-neutral options as manufacturers have improved their no-neutral designs.
My switch has a green wire. Is that the neutral?
Protective earth/ground and neutral serve different purposes and are not interchangeable. Do not identify wiring by color alone; have the circuit checked.
