Editorial examples and prices may be outdated. A protocol or ecosystem label does not confirm every feature. Check the exact device’s current documentation and reviewed connection paths. Specific corrections and references are noted below.
Buying your first smart switch should be simple. It's not — and that's the problem. You hit a wall of protocols, neutral wires, hubs, ecosystems, and Matter claims before you've even looked at a single product page.
This guide cuts through all of it. Answer four questions and you'll know exactly what to buy.
Question 1: What ecosystem do you use?
Start with your existing smart-home app or controller. Search for the exact device and review a documented route to that ecosystem. A brand or protocol label cannot confirm every feature, and no platform supports every device. Check limitations and required bridges before buying.
Question 2: Do you have a neutral wire?
Have the wiring identified by a qualified electrician. Do not assume a white conductor is a neutral. A neutral is only one requirement: voltage, load type, box space, grounding, and multi-way wiring also matter. Zooz ZEN76/ZEN77 and Lutron PD-5NE require a neutral. Use the neutral filter to start your search, then confirm the exact model’s manual.
Question 3: Do you want a hub?
Check the whole route, including the app, controller, coordinator, bridge, and network. Wi-Fi alone does not establish ecosystem support or cloud requirements. For Matter, check the controller and any Thread border router. For Zigbee or Z-Wave, confirm the hub or adapter’s exact device support and region.
Question 4: Any special requirements?
3-way switching: You control one light from two locations. Not all switches support this. Filter by "3-Way Support" on the listing page. Lutron Caséta, Kasa, Leviton, Inovelli, and Zooz all support 3-way.
Dimming: You want to dim the light, not just on/off. Look for switches labeled "Smart Dimmer." Note: not all switches are dimmers. The Inovelli Blue VZM31-SN and Zooz ZEN72/ZEN77 are excellent dimmers.
No cloud / local control: You want the switch to work without internet. Filter by "Local Control." Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Shelly (with local API) all provide local control.
Energy monitoring: You want to see how much power devices use. Kasa EP25, Shelly Plus 1PM, and TP-Link Tapo models include energy monitoring.

I just want something simple that works with Alexa. What should I buy?
Kasa EP25 ($19). No hub, easy app setup, works with Alexa natively, reliable Wi-Fi connection. It's the most recommended beginner smart switch on the market.
I'm building a new house. What should I install throughout?
Two strong options: (1) Lutron Caséta throughout — rock-solid, works with everything, easy to expand. Requires the Caséta Smart Bridge ($80) but worth it for whole-home installs. (2) Leviton D215S (Matter) throughout — no hub, works with every platform, local control. Both are excellent whole-home choices.
I have an old house from the 1970s. Will smart switches work?
Building age does not determine the wiring at a particular switch. Have it checked, then compare the exact model and load requirements. Zooz ZEN76 requires a neutral.
Are smart switches safe? Will they cause fires?
UL-listed smart switches from reputable manufacturers (Lutron, Leviton, Inovelli, Zooz, Kasa) are tested to the same safety standards as dumb switches. Avoid very cheap no-name switches from unknown manufacturers on Amazon. Stick to brands in our database.
